AUSTRALIA - KURANDA BIRDWATCHERS' CABIN - NORTHERN QUEENSLAND
Kuranda Birdwatchers' Cabin is located near Kuranda National Park in the Wet Tropics World Heritage rainforest in Far North Queensland, 30 minutes from Cairns International Airport and an easy walk from Kuranda Village.The self-contained pole home cabin has a veranda and is laid out for 1 or 2 adults (fully equipped kitchen, en-suite, queen-sized bed). It is the only guest accommodation on the property, set well apart and screened from the main house.
The cabin offers privacy, tranquillity and undisturbed birdwatching and viewing of wildlife. Being situated between Cairns and Mareeba you will have easy access to a multitude of attractions and activities between Cairns and Daintree and on the Atherton Tablelands.
The property consists mainly of rainforest and there is a small pond and a permanent creek within metres of the cabin. Thus birdwatchers and naturalists can easily observe an abundance of birds, butterflies, frogs, mammals and reptiles. Regular visitors or residents are, for example, Southern Cassowary, Victoria's Riflebird, Macleay's Honeyeater, Chowchilla, Red-necked Crake, Spotted Catbird, Rainbow Pitta, Fig Parrots, fruit-doves, musky rat-kangaroos, striped possums, pademelons, amethystine pythons, more than a dozen frog species, and, of course, Ulysses and Cairns Birdwing butterflies.
Elevation (approx. 400m above sea level) and rainforest setting result in a considerably cooler climate than in Cairns.

| AUSTRALIA - KINGFISHER PARK - JULATTEN, NORTHERN QUEENSLAND

Your hosts at Kingfisher Park Birdwatchers Lodge are two long time birdwatchers, Keith & Lindsay Fisher. They provide fully self-contained units, bunkhouse rooms, camping and caravan sites which are located in a 5 ha rainforest nature reserve, one and a half hours drive north-west of Cairns, in the rural community of Julatten. At an altitude of 440 metres, it is cooler than nearby coastal regions. It has walking tracks through the grounds, which consist of rainforest, an open grassed orchard and the permanent waters of Bushy Creek.

Over 200 species of birds have been recorded at the lodge and adjacent area plus many other native animals such as striped and green ringtail possums, northern and long-nosed bandicoots, Giant White-tail Rat, Boyd's Forest Dragon, Amethystine Python, Giant White-lipped Tree Frog plus many dragonfly, butterfly and moth species. Morning bird walks and evening spotlighting may be available depending on guide availability and minimum numbers, a small fee applies. Bird lists and maps are provided upon arrival.

Nearby habitats include rainforest, mountains, wetlands and drier open woodlands. Within easy reach are the Great Barrier Reef, Atherton Tableland, Daintree River, Cape Tribulation and Cooktown. From the breakfast verandah you can spot a variety of Honeyeaters, Mistletoebirds, Parrots and of course the Southern Cassowary - a daily visitor. A Yellow-bellied Sunbird has made its nest on the verandah, and a Wompoo Fruit-Dove has a nest in the trees nearby. Mission Beach is a short drive from Eubanangee Swamp, home to the Green-pygmy Goose, Australian Darter, Whistling Kite and many other birds.

Other birds that can be spotted here include the Beach Stone-Curlew, Buff-breasted Paradise Kingfisher, Double-eyed Fig-parrot, Grey Goshawk, Masked Lapwing, Nutmeg Mannikin, Spangled Drongo, White-bellied Sea-Eagle and the White-throated Needletail.

Cassowary House Birding Lodge is a small family run guest house which lies in the world heritage tropical rain forests of far north Queensland, within 30 minutes drive of Cairns. It was established in 1985 as a guest-house for those with an interest in natural history, particularly birds.
Accommodation includes 4 rooms, two en suite double rooms and two singles that have individual showers but share a toilet. Catbird Cottage, a self-contained cabin in the grounds may also be available. We offer top quality fresh home cooked food in friendly, comfortable surroundings. The grounds and surrounding area are unspoilt rainforest, a great place to sit and relax or take quiet walks. Feel free to take it easy on our verandah while watching the wealth of birds that come down in to the nearby trees and garden. This is also a good place for those with an interest in bird photography. Bird and mammal lists are available on request, as are e-mail facilities.
Expert guiding for birds and natural history is available, with either Phil, or other local professional guides. Phil is an experienced bird guide who currently runs Sicklebill Safaris as well as working for leading bird tour companies and would be happy to help you with your birding wants and queries.
There is plenty to see and do, with Cassowary House being in one of the best bird sites in Queensland. Cassowaries visit the garden almost daily, wandering in from the adjacent world heritage rainforest. The local endemic bird of paradise, Victoria's Riflebird, has display posts around the grounds and often comes to the feeding trays. The colourful and elusive Noisy Pitta also lives in the area and is frequently heard calling, though actually seeing one requires a bit more application! Other local birds include Red-necked Rails and Grey Goshawk which both breed in the garden, Lesser Sooty Owl, Brush Turkey and Orange-footed Scrubfowl, King Parrot, Double-eyed Fig-Parrot, Topknot Pigeon, Spotted Catbird, Black Butcherbird, Chowchilla, Lovely Fairywren, White-eared, Spectacled and Pied Monarchs, and Macleay's Honeyeater.

Red Mill House in Daintree Village combines the splendour of an old tropical Queenslander home built by a pioneering family and Tremaine, a tastefully designed modern addition. Red Mill House is owned and operated by two enthusiastic birdwatchers who are passionate about the area, Andrew and Trish Forsyth.
Breakfast on the verandah is a birdwatching experience in itself. The many bird species spotted include a variety of Honeyeaters, Yellow-bellied Sunbird, Mistletoe Bird and a pair of Orange-footed Scrubfowl who have made Red Mill House their home and can be seen busily tending to their nesting mound each day. The one and a half acre tropical rainforest garden has been progressively planted over more than 50 years with a diverse range of exotic tropical plants, fruit trees and local rainforest plants. This means there is always something fruiting or flowering in the garden ensuring that the birdlife is as diverse as the plant life. Egrets and Kingfishers can often be seen feeding in our large natural pond. A large salt water pool is available for cooling off in the warmer Daintree months.
