Filey |
201 (BOU) |
A strange year with almost as many BB passerines as scarce migrants. Like James and Justin, Filey had a blank for many annual species - with an awful spring and early autumn. On a weighted scoring system surely Steve would have won with a fantastic score at Belvide. Highlights: CITRINE WAGTAIL, GREENISH WARBLER (x2), DUSKY WARBLER (x2), SURF SCOTER, Hoopoe, Pallas's Warbler (X4), Red Kite (only Filey tick of the year). Best find was a single Pallas' Warbler so not much luck there. Happy New Year! |

Well done to all of those that took part, particuarly Andy, Craig and James. I have taken immense satisfaction out of staying local this year although I did have to travel to see most of the major county rarities. A poor year in both rarity and numbers terms on the peninsular, with Landguard recording both their worst September and October in history, there are many species that I failed to see, the worst of these being Velvet Scoter, Guillemot and Barn Owl but hopefully next year will see a more determind effort. The highlight of the year (apart from the birth of my daughter Eleanor) had to be the Buff-bellied Pipit. The low point had to be failing to make the 200 mark! Highlights: Slav Grebe, Cory's Shearwater, Leach's Petrel, Spoonbill, Monty's Harrier, Long-tailed Skua, GULL-BILLED TERN, BUFF-BELLIED PIPIT, Richard's Pipit, Marsh Warbler, Yellow-b. Warb., Pallas's Warb., Red-breasted Fly., Red-backed Shrike, Rose-coloured Starling, ARCTIC REDPOLL, Twite and Ortolan Bunting. Out of these, I managed to find the Cory's Shearwater, Gull-billed Tern, Rose-coloured Starling, Arctic Redpoll (joint find) and a few of the lesser rarities.I would also like to congratulate James Brown on achieving the second highest Suffolk yearlist ever. There is always next year mate to beat my record of 260 (BOU). All the best to you all - be back next year! |

Latest-Great Northern Diver 31/12. Not as good as the 218 I acheived in 2001 due to me chasing birds in south Suffolk a lot on my Suffolk yearlist. Highlights were a Warbler bonanza including Raddes, Dusky, 2 Siberian Chiffchaffs, 12 Yellow-browed and 2 Pallas` Warblers. Excellent Seawatching including Corys` Shearwater and Leach`s Petrels. Not forgetting the stunning Sabines Gull and American Golden Plover. Happy new year to all. |

Its been a fantastic year for me, smashing the old record of 165. Only 1 res tick out of that total, that was Black Redstart. Many highlights but WWB Tern, Pec Sand, Grey Phal and Cetti's Warbler stand out. I did'nt count White Headed Duck(which I think is OK) Caspian Gull Which surely is a future tick and a couple of Barnacle Geese in the spring of unknown origin. So could be 174. I only missed 4 species, RT Diver, LS Woodpecker, Crane and Sandwich Tern. In all I visited Belvide 308 times this year, again another record. Well done to all the patch workers because without you guys many birds would never be found. All the best for 2004 |

Latest- Great Northern Diver 31/12. Highlights of the year were two firsts for Suffolk: American Golden Plover and Humes Warbler. Best find was Great Snipe (on the same date that I found one in Suffolk last year!). Worst misses were Wood Warbler, Long-tailed Duck, Shorelark and Quail. Many thanks to the birders who have helped me this year and offered encouragement, particularly to Justin Zantboer (next year mate), Brian Small and James Wright. A happy and bird filled new year to everyone. |

Managed several county ticks though, including Black Kite, AGP, Sabine's and Bonaparte's Gulls, Citrine Wagtail, Pied Wheatear, Lesser Grey Shrike, Serin and Little Bunting. |

December 30th. Latest Long-tailed Duck. Time is running out for my attempt to see 200 in the county; if only I had not gone to Spain in May (missed easy Temminck's Stints and Red-rumped Swallow) and if only I could have been bothered to drive 45 minutes to Rutland Water for a Black Redstart I would have done it. Highlights county ticks of Woodlark, Great White Egret and Common Crane, plus being the first ever to see 3 BB rarities in the county in a day. |
