Purple Heron
"A couple of days ago, we heard rumours of a "funny heron" that had been seen several times at Saddington Reservoir and along the nearby canal. A couple of local birders, Nick Potter and Matthew Berriman, had fairly brief views of it on Saturday evening (9th) and thought it sufficiently interesting to warrant a further search early on Sunday morning. The bird left its roost just after dawn and was then finally seen well at 6:40 a.m. by Nick Potter and at 8:30 a.m. by myself, Richard and Dave Gray. The picture here shows it being harrassed by crows, which happened for a minute or so before it flew off back towards the reservoir. Unfortunately, the photos aren't great - mine are even worse as I lost my composure and ended up faffing around with Dave's scope instead! The reason I was a bit over-excited was due to the rarity of this species in Leicestershire - it is the 4th County record - the first two were of birds flying into Leicestershire from Derbyshire in 1968 and 1975 (and hence not seen by Leicestershire birders) and the third was found dead in 1989, so this was almost as good as a County first.

We have since heard from various dogwalkers, anglers, women on horses (!) etc, that they have been seeing a "funny heron" regularly in the area for up to two weeks." Rob Fray

There was a strong wind and unstable ground which explains the rather blurred image!

Taken with a Nikon coolpix 950 (3x) through Leica Apo-Televid 77 scope (about 40x).
