Black-crowned Night Herons are locally common nesters in southern Wisconsin while Yellow-crowned Night Herons are rare nesters usually found only in the very southern part of the State. In late summer observers look for single juvenile (or adult) YCNH among the many BCNH feeding and loafing in marshes in the evening.

These close-up digitals from Milwaukee provide a chance for a comparison study of both juvs. Compare the bill shape and color, the spotting and plumage coloration on the back and eye color. Compare the length of the tibiotarsi as well. John Idzikowski, Milwaukee
