Wood Stork
Wood Stork
"Immature Wood Storks, members of a group of 14 present on a small farm pond near the town of Clyde in Upstate New York. This is a few miles northwest of Montezuma NWR. The group had been present in the area for more than a week and were first discovered coming to a tiny backyard pool where they devoured the stocked Bullheads. Presumably the Wood Storks reached New York as part of the same movement that put smaller numbers in neighboring Ontario and Pennsylvania. To the best of my knowledge no adults are involved. It is unclear whether these birds originate from Florida or from further south. All photos were taken through a Kowa TSN-4 scope using a Nikon Coolpix 880 digital camera." Golden-winged Warbler

While one or two Golden-winged Warblers usually show up each spring in Colorado, there are only five documented fall records for the state. This first-fall female was banded at Barr Lake on 31 August and is only the second documented for Adams county.© Chris Wood

Another great bird from this location (see the Canada Warbler below)! Barr Lake State Park is a great birding location, with several regional rarities seen most years. Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory, which runs the Barr Lake banding station, is still in need of a bander for THIS FALL at Barr Lake! Please contact Tony Leukering ASAP. Can you help? Please click here for more info on banding position

Canada Warbler

Very rare in Colorado, this Canada Warbler provided the state with only its 23rd record. It was banded on 28 August 2001 at Barr Lake State Park. The only previous captured bird for Colorado was also at Barr Lake, on 31 August 1996. Six of the eight fall Colorado records since 1975 have fallen in the narrow range of dates between 28 August and 3 September. © Chris Wood

As this bird illustrates, Barr Lake State Park is a great birding location, with several regional rarities seen most years. Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory, which runs the Barr Lake banding station, is still in need of a bander for THIS FALL at Barr Lake! Please contact Tony Leukering ASAP. Can you help? Hudsonian Godwit

Hudsonian Godwit from Jamaica Bay NWR in New York City. Hudsonian Godwits are uncommon in NY state (less than a dozen per year) and 'the Bay' hosted up to four Hudsonians this weekend, together with a Marbled Godwit (again uncommon in the state). Photo taken with a Nikon Coolpix 880 digital camera through a Kowa TSN-4 scope. Angus Wilson
