MONTHLY SKETCHBOOK

MARCH 2000

By Andy Birch

MARCH 25TH, 2000; Rockport, Texas

The first morning of our trip was spent around Rockport, where we saw many Royal Terns in a variety of plumages amongst Sandwich Terns. The birds were loafing around on the beach and jetties off shore.

MARCH 27TH, 2000; Santa Ana, Texas
Without a doubt, the rarest bird of our trip was the male Gray- crowned Yellowthroat that was discovered a few days previously at Santa Ana.

We caught up with this bird singing its heart out in a small reedbed at the corner of the main lake - often giving views at point blank range. It was surprisingly difficult to pick out even at the tops of the reeds when it had its back towards us,

Snowy Plovers were also common along the Gulf Coast.
APRIL 1ST, 2000; Lost Maples and Kerr, Texas

We had saved our last two target birds to the last day. Fortunately, the Golden cheeked Warblers showed well at Lost Maples despite the wet weather but the Black capped Vireo was very difficult before showing well in the last hours of sunlight at Kerr.
