BENGUERRA ISLAND, BENGUERRA LODGE

Benguerra Lodge

Benguerra is the second largest island in the Bazaruto Archipelago. The island is approximately 55 square kilometers (11km long x 5.5 km wide), and lies 14km offshore. It is famous for its unspoiled white beaches, remarkable dive sites and excellent fishing. Some of the best scuba diving and snorkeling in the world is available off Benguerra’s shores with the surrounding coral reefs rich in sea life. The archipelago is one of the last remaining habitats of the endangered Dugong.

Inland, Benguerra Island comprises forest, savannah, freshwater lakes and wetland eco-systems that sustain a diverse population of fauna and flora. Fresh water crocodiles can be found in the three lakes, bearing testimony to the island's mainland past. The island, which is home to approximately 140 bird species, was declared a National Park in 1971.

Benguerra Lodge and the Bazaruto National Park strive to maintain the diverse and pristine environment. Since the inception of the Lodge in 1988, its owners, management and staff have been intricately involved in the ecological preservation and conservation of the island's heritage.

NIASSA RESERVE, LUGENDA WILDERNESS CAMP

Lugenda Wilderness Camp

Lugenda Wilderness Camp provides visitors with the true quality of wilderness that is rare to find on safari today. Located in the greater Niassa National Reserve in the remotest corner of northern Mozambique, Lugenda Wilderness Camp is set in one of the continent's 'last wild places'.

The largest conservation area in Mozambique, twice the size of the Kruger, the Niassa Reserve covers parts of Cabo Delgado Province and nearly one third of Niassa Province. This huge wilderness preserve, covering 42,000 square kilometers, is only just being discovered and contains by far the greatest concentration of wildlife in Mozambique.

Niassa provides visitors with an experience of pure wilderness - it is one of the last vestiges of the wildness that characterised the African interior centuries ago. The wildlife remains free and unfettered and the results of a recent aerial census estimated over 12,000 elephant, 9,000 Sable Antelope and several thousand Cape Buffalo. Lichtenstein's Hartebeest, eland and zebra roam the plains and river valleys against a backdrop of towering inselbergs (or island mountains) that dominate the topography here.

Niassa National Reserve provides refuge for over 200 endangered Cape Hunting Dog (African Wild Dog), as well as other predators such as lion, leopard and Spotted Hyena, and general game such as kudu, bushbuck, impala, wildebeest, waterbuck, reedbuck and hippo. Three sub-species, the Niassa Wildebeest, Boehm's Zebra and Johnston's Impala are endemic to the Niassa area.
