NORTH DAKOTA, USA

PRAIRIE SMOKE RANCH, CENTRAL NORTH DAKOTA

Prairie Smoke Ranch

Located in the center of North Dakota, midway between Bismarck and Minot, with easy highway access from Interstate 94 Prairie Smoke Ranch offers some of the best birding in the Midwest. If your idea of birding is to see prairie birds in their natural and native habitat, with the blazing prairie stars and a chorus of coyotes thrown in as a bonus each evening, Prairie Smoke Ranch is the right place for you.

Located in the Missouri Coteau of the Central Flyway, the ranch hosts a mix of grasslands, wetlands and native prairie. Over 15 waterfowl species and a mix of shorebird species complement hundreds of upland and native grassland species. The ranch is fortunate to be located just minutes away from numerous state and federal wildlife areas open to the public, including the 30,000 acre Lonetree State Wildlife Area.

Hear the burble of Sharp-tailed Grouse mixed with the prehistoric cries of Sandhill Cranes and hundreds of waterfowl and shorebirds, each claiming their own piece of the prairie for all to hear. Similarly, you may as well get used to the scolding of Avocets and Upland Sandpipers as they will likely accompany you during your treks on the property.

Prairie Smoke Ranch is a complete four-bedroom house with full kitchen, laundry and all the amenities. The ranch can accommodate spring and summer birding tours. Weekends and week reservations are taken first-come, first-serve.
