Asia - Nepal

Nepal, lying between Tibet to the north and India to the south, has a remarkably diverse range of bird species for such a small country. Over 840 species have been recorded although only one, the Spiny Babbler is endemic.

This richness of birdlife is attributed to the diversity of habitats and its position sitting along the line that separates the palearctic from the orient. To the north of the country lie the Himalayas and the world highest mountain, to the south a tropical lowland strip which lies just above sea level. One third of the country is forested, providing home to many species including eight species of pheasant, including the enigmatic Himalayan Monal, the country's national bird.
