Central America - Panama

Panama offers an astonishing diversity of bird life for a country smaller than the state of South Carolina. Some 970 species have been recorded in the country, more than the number recorded in continental United States and Canada combined and more than any other country in North or Central America apart from Mexico, which is 26 times Panama's size.

Panama has 12 national endemics and 105 regional endemics as well as many South American species that range no further north. The location of many species within a days drive of Panama City makes it straightforward to see a wide diversity of species in a short period of time.

Panama's diversity is further augmented by many migrants visiting during the northern winter. Both Atlantic and Pacific seabirds reach its shores.

Panama retains more of its forest cover than most other countries in Central America and much of it is protected by a network of national parks. The Darien features some of the wildest country remaining in the Americas. Ornithological riches await visitors to Panama.
