Location: Cape Verde Islands
Sightings: Cape Verde - 3 New species for CV List. Santiago: At the (new) Seca reservoir ('Barragem do Seca´) on Santiago on 15-17th December there were Black-crowned Night Heron (7), Spoonbill (also 7, including 2x colour ringed birds), a female Shoveler (1st record for CV), Blue-winged Teal (2nd for CV), Jack Snipe (2nd for CV), Teal/Green-winged Teal 5 (there are less than 10 records of either species) and a Lesser Yellowlegs (on 16-17th only). There were also Snipe 5, Green Sandpiper 1, Moorhen 6+ and Little Ringed Plover 4. São Vincent: The Mindelo sewage farm was visited on 18-21st Dec and again on 31st Dec to 2nd Jan (all birds present throughout this period unless stated otherwise) there were a further 6 Shoveler (2nd record for CV), 2 Ring-necked Ducks (on 18th to 20th only – 2nd for CV), a White-rumped Sandpiper (18th December to 2nd Jan - 4th record for CV), a Lesser Yellowlegs, Little Ringed Plover 2 (on 18th only), 'alba' Wag 2 on 19th and 1 on 20th), Red-throated Pipit, Swallow 5 on 19th and two the next day, Red-rumped Swallow 2 on 19th. A Starling on 31st December (3rd for CV). Santo Antão: On Santo Antão sightings of unidentified Kites on 22nd, 24th, and two together on 29th give hope that Red Kite might not yet be extinct on Cape Verde (note recent genetic research these are ‘normal’ Red Kites). While on the same island there was a strong afternoon eastward passage of Fea´s Petrels past Ponta do Sol on 27th to 30th, with a peak of 145 in an hour on 29th, (peak passage occurs mid to late afternoon each day). São Nicolau: A third winter Audouin’s Gull flew east past Juncalinho on 5th Jan (1st for CV), while a singing Cape Verde Cane Warbler at Ribiera dos Calhaus on 6th Jan represents a small extension to the limited distribution of this species on São Nicolau. Sal: There were 2 Knot on the Santa Maria Saltpans on 7th Jan. At the Santa Maria sewage works on 7th to 10th Jan there were 2 ‘alba’ Wagtails, a Citrine Wagtail (presumed to be the bird first seen in late October – 2nd for CV), 2 Red-throated Pipits (one1st winter and one adult), a Wheatear (7th Jan only) and 3 Hoopoe Larks. There was a Swallow at Espargos on 8th Jan. Finally a Rock Martin at the Fontana Oasis on 8th was the 1st for CV. The Santa Maria sewage works (which don’t figure in trip reports) are well worth a visit; they lie 800m north-west of the Hotel Morabeza, follow the minor road past the cemetery and then head for a small clump of palms).
