Mabamba Swamp: 3rd June: We spent a few hours traversing this excellent wetland area in search of this mighty bird that proved more difficult to locate than anticipated. We learnt that the day before our arrival some researchers had over flow the swamp in a light aircraft and had disturbed the birds from their usual favoured haunts and as a result we spent longer here trying to locate them than planned. We were, however, rewarded with fine views of 5 different birds in flight with one of these subsequently located ‘on the ground’ by early afternoon. A superb bird and well worth the effort put in.

Note: an all-dark bird along the Maramagambo Forest Trail on 14th June had a very strong resemblance to Bedford’s Paradise Flycatcher that is only found in two areas in nearby Congo. Dark morph African Paradise birds always have a red plumage somewhere but this bird lacked this. The plumage and structure better fit Bedford’s more than African Paradise. This or another bird was seen a few weeks earlier only a short distance from here by Johnnie, it could represent a new species for Uganda, further observations will only tell.

Queen Elizabeth National Park: 13th June: large family herd along the Kazinga Channel was later seen at dusk in the park. I addition several singles and pairs were seen along the lake shore; 15th June: the same previous family party was seen early morning as we left Mweya Lodge

Burchell’s Zebra
Lake Mburo: 20th June: 20+ soon after entering the park; 21st June: 70+. This is the only location in Uganda where you will see this species

Hippopotamus
Murchison Falls National Park: 7th June: 8+ with a further 170+ on the Nile during the boat trip to the Falls

Semliki: 10th & 12th June: several of these colourful lizards seen around the park HQ buildings

Chameleon sp.
Royal Mile: 6th June: a single bright green individual rocking its way across the road as we left for Murchison Falls National Park
Another was seen on the 8th whilst travelling to Kibale

Lizards spp.
There were many unidentified skinks, gecko’s and agama’s seen at a number of different sites

Butterflies
There were many stunning Butterflies seen during the trip with Mabira Forest, the Royal Mile, Kibale and Bwindi having the largest varieties.
