Alabama Rare Bird Report – Tuesday January 31, 2012.

The Dauphin Island PURPLE SANDPIPER discovered 1/15 on the rock berm across the Katrina Cut between Dauphin Island and West Dauphin Island, was seen again 1/16 both on the rocks and on the west end beach. There have been no more positive sightings reported since that day although several birders have certainly looked. There is a lot of distant rock habitat to check along this berm and not all sections may be viewed well from the beach even with a scope. A kayak or boat would provide the most complete coverage. Sightings both days were with Sanderlings and Ruddy Turnstones and on the north (sound) side of the berm. The beach parking lot at the end of Bienville Blvd. is apparently being left open (no charge) from 7 am until dusk daily this winter. From the parking lot a 0.5 mile walk is required to reach the east end of the berm. Updates on search results for this bird would be appreciated. Both GREAT BLACK-BACKED (up to 3 birds of various ages) and a GLAUCOUS GULL have been seen here over the last half of the month. Another (or the same?) GLAUCOUS was seen 1/18 at the north end of the AL193 island bridge at Cedar Point. [DeAL 64-B2][BGtA p. 6-12][ACBT #45]

A male BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK continued 1/16 at a private feeder in Baldwin County where it has been since 12/12. The location is at 119 Sara Ave. East between Spanish Fort and Malbis. Call (251) 272-0010 to arrange a visit and obtain more information. [DeAL 63-D6]

The female BROAD-BILLED HUMMINGBIRD continues to be seen at the Eden home in Spanish Fort near Mobile. It was banded 12/10. Birders should call for the latest info and arrangements. The phone numbers are home (251) 625-3614 and mobile (251) 423-5175. The home phone is the best number to try first. The home is located at 7 Watchtower (one word). [DeAL 62-D5]

At least one BUFF-BELLIED HUMMINGBIRD continued through 1/21 at the Dickerson residence in Lillian located at 10537 County 99 (Baldwin County). The location is 2.6 miles south of US 98 at the northwest corner of County 99 and Carrier Drive. Please call before visiting: 251-961-3000. . [DeAL 63-H10]

An ICELAND GULL was seen again 1/19 at the Magnolia Springs landfill in Baldwin County. Besides the trash dumping locations described below, also be sure and check the drainage pond near the office. [DeAL 63-G7][BGtA p. 37][ACBT #19] PLEASE NOTE: The visitation procedures for the Magnolia Springs landfill (Baldwin County) have been received for the 2011-2012 season and may be accessed at:

A GOLDEN EAGLE was seen by several AOS winter meeting attendees last weekend at Eufaula NWR in Barbour County. On 1/28 it was seen near the observation tower along the wildlife car loop. [DeAL 54-B4&5][BGtA p. 80-88]

A CACKLING GOOSE was discovered 1/24 associating with the large Snow Goose flock on Limestone Bay in Wheeler NWR. It was seen again 1/28. Ross’s Geese are also present in the flock. Four female COMMON MERGANSERS were seen again 1/24 at this location. During December they seemed to prefer the north end of the bay but I have no details where they were this time. [DeAL 18-F5&G4][BGtA p. 240-244][NABT #23&24]

Two CACKLING GEESE were also seen earlier this month 1/17 on Church Pond west of Florence. [DeAL 17-C6] Map: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=215710979739831854086.000467010415d3f732500&msa=0

The male BROAD-TAILED HUMMINGBIRD continues at the Wayland home in Killen (Lauderdale County) where it has been since mid-November. The address is 9218 Turtle Point Drive. Call to make arrangements and check current status: (256) 757-2467. [DeAL 17-C8]
