This is the Los Angeles Rare Bird Alert for Thursday, February 9.
A male and two female WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS were off Dockweiler State Beach in El Segundo through February 6.
Two BALD EAGLES were seen at Bonelli Regional Park in San Dimas on February 7 where at least one has been present off and on for some time. They were both near the east shore RV park.
A BURROWING OWL continues at the San Gabriel River Spreading Grounds. It has been near the spillway for the south pond. Access is from the west side of the basins off Washington Blvd, just west of the 605 Freeway.
Another BURROWING OWL was found at the Rio Hondo spreading basins. Entrance is at the west end of Mines Ave where it meets Paramount.
Veteran’s Park in Sylmar still hosts a RED-NAPED SAPSUCKER, a YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER and a male and female WILLIAMSON’S SAPSUCKER.
The GRAY FLYCATCHER continues at Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City southwest of the office complex near the top of the hill. The latest report was on February 8.
A SAGE THRASHER was at the Rio Hondo spreading basins in Pico Rivera on February 4. It was about 125 yards north of the entrance at Mines and Paramount.
LECONTE’S THRASHERS were at the Piute Ponds on February 4, with two birds in salt cedar east of the Ducks Unlimited Ponds. SAGE THRASHERS were also present. Remember that this area is government property and there is no entry without a letter of permission.
A BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER was at Hahamongna Watershed Park- formerly Oak Grove Park- in Pasadena on February 5. It was in the upper west area of the park (at the top of the bluff) along the horse trail.
A CHESTNUT-SIDED WARBLER continues at Legg Lake in South El Monte. It has been in its usual area in the bare trees just west of restroom #7. About 200 yards farther west, in trees along the south shore of the lake, a continuing BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER was still present on February 4.
The male SUMMER TANAGER continued at West LA College along Freshman Drive, just inside the entrance to the campus. It was last seen on February 8. Another SUMMER TANAGER was discovered in Palos Verdes on February 4.
A female ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK was at Marvin Braude Mulholland Gateway Park in Tarzana on February 8. It was in the southeast part of the park.
A male BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK was at Descanso Gardens in La Canada on February 3.
