Welcome to
Pennsylvania Audubon's and the Patriot-News' Birdline. This Birdline covers
sightings made primarily during the week prior to Thursday, February 9,
2012.
BRADFORD COUNTY:
A NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL was heard calling at
Peck Hill on the evening on February 6 (AV, GV).
CENTRE COUNTY:
Two
immature and 2 adult BALD EAGLES were seen on February 4 at Bald Eagle State
Park (BSn). One immature BALD EAGLE and 1 GOLDEN EAGLE were seen at or from the
park on February 6 (AL).
Six light morph and 3 dark morph ROUGH-LEGGED
HAWKS were found on February 4 during a Winter Raptor Survey in Penns and Brush
Valley (SH, BH).
Two light- and one dark-morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS were
observed on February 5 along Route 192 west of Madisonburg (GG).
A
NORTHERN SHRIKE was found on February 5 along Rusknak Hill Road (JV).
A
juvenile PEREGRINE FALCON was seen on February 8 perched on a snag near a pond
at the intersection of Rock Hill and Linden Roads (AL, DGu).
CLEARFIELD
COUNTY:
One female COMMON REDPOLL visited a feeding area in DuBois on
February 5 (MA).
CUMBERLAND COUNTY:
The SNOWY OWL continues to be seen
through at least February 8 near the intersection of Duncan and Mud Level Roads
(NT, DY, CY, ML, DSn). On February 7 the SNOWY OWL was found west of the
intersection of Mud Level and Duncan Roads behind the Amish School House near
the farm with the three silo farm (BK). Note: there now have been SEVERAL
reports of people trying to closely approach the owl to take photographs
resulting it the owl flying off. DO NOT DO THIS! IT STRESSES THE OWL. MAKING IT
FLY AROUND JUST TO TAKE A PICTURE MAKES IT USE UP ENERGY IT MAY NEED TO SURVIVE.
One MERLIN was seen in the area on February 5 (SC).
The PRAIRIE FALCON
was spotted on the morning of February 4 sitting on a big pile of rocks near a
farm south of the Running Pump and Mud Level Roads (ML). Later it was seen in
the afternoon of February 4 northwest of Mud Level and west of Duncan Roads
(ML).
The TOWNSEND'S WARBLER continues to be seen through at least
February 5 (DW, DY, CY, DG, GG, ML, SC). Andy Green welcomes visitors to his
yard to see the TOWNSEND'S WARBLER. His address is 1133 Pine Road, Carlisle
(paste these coordinates into Google Maps: 40.1126724,-77.277326). This is about
half a mile east of the Kings Gap Store. Andy's driveway is gravel and is
well-marked with the house number on a signpost as well as on a green mailbox.
Visitors are welcome during daylight hours - the feeders are visible from the
driveway on the creek side of the house. The bird can be seen best on the back
deck of the home which Andy Green (the home owner) has graciously agreed too.
You can drive down the long gravel drive and park in front of the red shed at
the end but not in front of the garage on the left. Feel free to park along the
driveway, but do not block it. Andy said it is o.k. to park on the grass
shoulder. Andy says he has seen it since around. Please keep an eye out for
other warblers that are feeding in this yard along the Yellow Breeches Creek - a
PINE WARBLER and a YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT also come in on occasion.
