This is the Victoria Natural History Society's Bird Alert for Friday, January 27, 7 pm update.  To report sightings of interest, please call 250-704-2555 and leave your name, message and phone number.  To summon those who can confirm a rare bird, please call Barbara Begg at 250-656-5296 or Rick Schortinghuis at 250-885-2454.

ANNOUNCEMENT:
The VNHS Saturday Birding Group on Saturday, January 28, will be doing the 10 km walk around Beaver and Elk Lake. Meet at 8:00 am at the main parking lot at Beaver Lake. To reach this parking lot, turn on to Beaver Lake Rd off Elk Lake Drive (parallels the Pat Bay Highway). There is a large park sign at this intersection. All are welcome, but no pets please.

RARE BIRD ALERTS:
The RUSTY BLACKBIRD continues in the Martindale area, having been seen most recently with a flock of other blackbirds on Island View Road between McHugh and Dawson on Tuesday, January 24.
According to a second-hand report, an adult SLATY-BACKED GULL has been in the Mill Bay area for at least a month and a half.
The exotic sparrows continue at Panama Flats, with the AMERICAN TREE SPARROW seen most recently on Saturday, January 21.

EARED GREBE, TOWNSEND'S WARBLER, EVENING GROSBEAK, TURKEY VULTURE, SNOW GOOSE, AMERICAN KESTREL, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, SNOW BUNTING, WHITE-THROATED SPARROW

Friday, January 27:
An EARED GREBE was on Cordova Bay off McMorran’s.

Thursday, January 26:
Two dozen or so SURFBIRDS were at Bowker Rocks in Oak Bay.
Two TURKEY VULTURES were seen from the gravel pit in Metchosin.
Three AMERICAN DIPPERS were below the bridge at Goldstream Provincial Park.
550 WESTERN GREBES were in Saanich Inlet, seen from Mill Bay Road.
Two TUNDRA SWANS were on Koksilah Road south of Duncan, east of the Island Highway. In Duncan itself, a TOWNSEND'S WARBLER continues at a feeder, and a group of EVENING GROSBEAKS remains at the hatchery on Corfield Road.

Wednesday, January 25:
Eighteen CANVASBACKS and about fifty AMERICAN COOTS were seen near the rowing dock at Elk Lake. Also visible to the west was one TURKEY VULTURE.
A SNOW GOOSE was with CANADA GEESE on Metchosin Road near Swanwick Road.

Tuesday, January 24:
Four AMERICAN PIPITS were on the bulb fields in Central Saanich. A female AMERICAN KESTREL was on Newman Road nearby.

Monday, January 23:
An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was with many other birds on Joan Crescent in Victoria.
Nineteen MOURNING DOVES and a single EURASIAN COLLARED DOVE were on Dooley Road in the Martindale area. Three SAVANNAH SPARROWS were in the ditch along Lochside Drive south of Island View Road.
A SNOW BUNTING was at the tip of Saanichton Spit.

Sunday, January 22:
A WHITE-THROATED SPARROW was in a yard in Saanich.
A male AMERICAN KESTREL was spotted on Wallace Drive in Central Saanich, north of Newman Road.

Saturday, January 21:
One SKYLARK and ten SAVANNAH SPARROWS were at Panama Flats.
A RED-THROATED LOON was at Esquimalt Lagoon.
