GABOers,
Seven of us birded Raccoon Key, a privately owned island about a 10-15
minute boat ride from the Jekyll Island Marina on Saturday, September 5,
2009. This is a new birding location and the owner of the island is trying
to build it up as a eco-tourism destination. The island was going to be a
commercial fishing operation but they dug the ponds too deep and ran into
the Florida Aquifer. As a result there are several fresh-water impoundments
with walkable dikes between them. It was a last minute addition to the
slate of field trips for the upcoming Colonial Coast Birding and Nature
Festival.
The numbers of Black-crowned Night-Herons and Roseate Spoonbills that we saw
were very impressive indeed. Following is the e-bird report:

Notes: Tide was very high due to full moon. As a result we did not have many
shorebirds as there was very little beach. Very few trees on island so not
many woodland birds.
