I live in Lafayette and wanted to comment about the goldfinch number
question. I did not have a finch until late Jan and then 20-30 off and on until
about 3 days ago when they vanished. However, for me it has been a really
good goldfinch year. I bird Lake Martin a lot and have never recorded more
there than this winter. The lake was low during the summer and a lot of
grass came up in the drier areas and must have had a great seed crop because the
goldfinches were thick in there for about a month. Also a lot of them in
gum trees and tallow trees. This morning I saw them all along the road along
the lake in newly budded out trees. I was not sure if they were eating
some part of the buds or insects but still plenty of them. Maybe it is just a
matter of an abundant natural food year. Danny Dobbs
