The herons here now are the ones that never left, often first year birds. Many winters this is not a good plan at all, but this year they will probably live thru the winter. Just west of the Foster Road bridge (not Maple) there is a place which almost never freezes on the south bank. They often hang out there when the going gets bad. When it gets really bad, they are found on people's porches, starving and freezing. We can seldom pull them through at that point.
