Folks,
Hello. The great bird that Radd Icenoggle found today on the Refuge was refound at 4:25 pm away from original sighting location. The bird had moved to a powerpole south of Refuge Headquarters; specifically ~150 yards southeast of the historic Whaley Homestead (old white structure along Wildfowl Lane). Got several digiscope photos of poor quality; enough to say it is gyr however (posted in photo section under Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge).
If you come to the Refuge on Saturday to see this bird, please understand that there will be a FWP sponsored Hunter Safety course in action at the Refuge Headquarters. The Kenai Nature Trail (from which the bird was originally seen) will be CLOSED to the public due to safety concerns (live fire from course participants). The Visitor Center will remain open and accessible to the public; this is a good spot to scope the nearby powerpoles (spot from which the bird was refound). Thanks for your understanding and look forward to greeting you in your birding efforts.
