Have been visiting daily and 3 times a week, placing food for the Common Gallinule currently present at Red Bridge Pond here in Dartmouth. It appears (by its movement walking atop the reeds & its strong swimming) to be in good health, & is always aware, wary & bright. Took a long time to appear this morning, & did head to the food placement areas, so hope it got some (but, then, so did the ducks, crows & gulls). There were, however, a couple of men on the ice close to the pond edge closest to Waverly Road playing hockey. Guess the ice might be safe there in the pond. Don't think it is on the bigger lakes yet. The American Coot is also present, by Banook Canoe Club. Actually ran, squaking, toward me when I started to spread some cracked corn. Not sure if that is a good sign or not. Just hoping it is not starving. Many Mallards there, so lots of competition for food. Did not have a suet block to leave today. Will take one tomorrow after work.
