I made a stop at Newport News Park this morning, since I keep missing
Hampton Roads Bird Club's regularly scheduled walks the 1st and 3rd Sundays at
7 AM...sorry for the shameless plug. I was surprised to find Tundra Swans
on the water behind the ranger station. The Mute Swans were also present
today, but they were closer to the swamp bridge. About half way to the
swamp bridge, I ran into a pocket of Ruby-crowned and Golden-crowned Kinglets.
Three rafts of ducks were present this morning. One composed exclusively
of Ring-necked Ducks, and the other solely Gadwall. The third raft was a
mix of American Wigeon and Hooded Mergansers. Only woodpecker that didn't
show today was the Red-headed Woodpecker.
