BELVIDE BIRDING

• Sunday, June 21, 2009 - Belvide Overcast NW 3

2 Common Sandpiper were on the dam this morning also 2 LRP at the west end and 3 Curlew flew thru. The moulting Coot flock continues to increase with 306 counted. 2 dead Moles were on the footpath along the Gazebo bay this morning, strangely found side by side. On my way back they had both disappeared????

Occasionally moles will meet and if they both happen to be males (Boars) they will fight and go on till the death, The winners have been known to eat their former family member. They will also eat mice and other small animals they can catch. They have a toxin in their spit that can paralyze the earth worm, their normal prey and have been known to store them in their runs. Up to 1000 worms have been found in these larders. "I bet it was a hell of a scrap."

What is it about dead Moles at the moment, seem to be a lot of them. I saw one at Shapwick Heath in Somerset last week, and heard about others being seen.
