BELVIDE BIRDING

• Monday, June 25, 2007 - Belvide Heavy Rain NE-N 3

After continuouse rain from 11pm last night I arrived today to find the water level was a good 3 inches over the spill weir. When the reservoir was full in the winter, it never came over the spill weir at this rate. On my walk round the boundary ditches were almost at burstng point, so it was no great suprise when I arrived at the Gazebo bay to find that the ditches had burst their banks and flooded the whole footpath. The water level on the paths were that deep it almost came above my wellingtons!!! In the 23 years I have been coming here I have never known anything like this and so unusually in the summer.

So anyone visiting Belvide in the next day or two should be advised to wear wellingtons. It is also interesting to note that when I left at around 5pm I checked the spill weir again to find that the water level had probably risen another 2 inches!! with it still pouring with rain.

On the bird front there was very little of note other than 10+ Common Tern.

Below photo of the flooded Gazebo bay and the torrent of water over the spill weir.
