BELVIDE BIRDING

• Saturday, July 7, 2007 - Belvide Fair W 4

Both the Common Terns nesting on the new rafts have 2 chicks each, which is just reward for the effort of building and towing the rafts out several weeks ago. 2 Common Sandpiper were also roosting on the new raft infront of the Scott hide. The Pochard hybrid resembling a Redhead (photo) was still present.

This bird shows an extensive grey bill but lacks a white sub terminal band behind the black bill tip, also there is a slight amount of black at the base of the bill. The head is rounded but not as bulbouse as Redhead also the eye is orange. The mantle and back colour is a darker grey than the greyish white flanks. The bird has a high percentage of Pochard in its parentage but I'm not sure what the other parent is. Scaup, Tufted Duck, Ferruginous Duck???
