BELVIDE BIRDING

• Thursday, September 20, 2007 - Belvide Cloudy W 3

2 juvenile Arctic Terns were new in. The juvenile Scaup was still present between the Gazebo and Bryant hides. An adult Mediterranean Gull roosted this evening also an odd BH Gull with pure white primaries. The evil Great Black Backed Gull has returned for its 4th winter and waisted no time in killing a female Ruddy Duck. 2 Ringed Plover and 1 Common Sandpiper were the only waders present. Wigeon have increased to 26 also 4+ Pintail still.

Hi Simon, I have lost count how many ducks this bird has killed. Its favourite is definatley Ruddy Duck, but I have also seen it kill Tufted Duck and Pochard and also had a pop at a Common Scoter once. Its tactic is to drift in amongst a sleeping raft of ducks, lying flat on the water then snatching the sleeping bird, killing it by drowning.
