BELVIDE BIRDING

• Tuesday, January 1, 2008 - Belvide Overcast SW 1-2

A new years day, day list was attempted today by myself and Kevin Clements with us starting at 8.15am. It got off to a tremendous start with a juvenile Glaucous Gull preening on the north shore with around 50 other large gulls. My theory being this was the Chasewater bird from yesterday and probably got spooked from there as the new year fireworks set off. It was present till 9.25 when it flew off to the west in the mist. The drake Mandarin from yesterday was still present. At the end of the day we achieved an excellent 78 species, these were GC Grebe, Cormorant, Grey Heron, Mute Swan, Canada Goose, Mandarin, Mallard, Pintail, Gadwall, Shoveler, Wigeon, Teal, Pochard, Tufted Duck, Goldeneye, Ruddy Duck, Buzzard, Sparrowhawk, Kestrel, Pheasant, Water Rail, Moorhen, Coot, Golden Plover, Lapwing, Snipe, BH Gull, Common Gull, Yellow-legged Gull, Herring Gull, Glaucous Gull, LBB Gull, GBB Gull, Feral Pigeon, Stock Dove, Wood Pigeon, Collared Dove, Green Woodpecker, GS Woodpecker, Skylark, Meadow Pipit, Pied Wagtail, Grey Wagtail, Wren, Dunnock, Robin, Stonechat, Song Thrush, Redwing, Mistle Thrush, Fieldfare, Blackbird, Goldcrest, Great Tit, Coal Tit, Blue Tit, Marsh Tit, Willow Tit, LT Tit, Nuthatch, Treecreeper, Magpie, Jay, Jackdaw, Rook, Crow, Raven, Starling, House Sparrow, Tree Sparrow, Chaffinch, Redpoll, Goldfinch, Greenfinch, Siskin, Bullfinch, Reed Bunting and Yellowhammer.

As far as I know this is a new year day record total. Thanks also to Chris, Pete, Graham and Moira who joined in on the way. The only birds we missed that were seen by others was a Woodcock and Little Owl was heard.

At least 2 Nordic Jackdaws were seen below the dam and 4 Yellow-legged Gulls roosted including an adult, 2 3rd winters and 1 2nd winter also 18 GBB Gull which is a good total for Belvide.

Steve,
Thank you for a most excellent day, with some quality birds, not least Nordic Jackdaw, which was a new one for me!
I'm back to work tomorrow, so you will soon pull ahead!
Kevin.
