BELVIDE BIRDING

• Tuesday, July 8, 2008 - Belvide Fair W 3

A Greenshank was a new arrival also 1 Redshank, 5 Common Sandpiper and 3 LRP were present. Shoveler have increased to 12. On a sad note the 2 Common Tern chicks on the left hand raft in front of the Scott hide have died. It appears that both the parents have either disappeared or abandoned the chicks. A pair have been landing on the raft and displaying, so weather this is the original pair or a new pair is unclear.

Could it have been disturbance from wringing the chicks causing the parents to stay away??

In response to MJR comment, No way was the ringing of the chicks to blame for this unfortunate incident. The chicks were ringed on the 26th June from which time the parents continued to feed the chicks well until the 5th July. The 3 chicks on the other raft were ringed at the same time and there is no problem with that family. It's just one of those things.
