BELVIDE BIRDING

• Friday, October 10, 2008 - Belvide Cloudy S 3

Very quiet today. The bird that was previously thought to be a Australian Shoveler has been re-identified as a hybrid Blue winged Teal/Shoveler. The bird is noticeably smaller than Northern Shoveler. The bill isn't as broad and spatula shaped as shoveler. The legs are a yellowish orange like a Blue winged Teal instead of the deep orange of Shoveler. Also the distinct whitish crescent infront of the eye looks too broad and distinct even for an eclipse shoveler.

A juvenile Ruff, 2 Shelduck and 1 Chiffchaff were the only other birds worth noting.

There was a Blue-winged Teal/Shoveler hybrid a few years ago which ended up a long stayer.
