Poole Harbour - New Years Day - 8:14 PM, Monday, January 1, 2007

An early start enabled a reasonable look round Baiter, about a hundred Brents, one Little Stint and a Great Northern Diver just offshore. A visit to Brands Bay revealed five more Great Northern Divers before heavy rain, hail and lightning brought an end to the day.

In the same place as last year - a Little Stint in the puddles at Baiter.

Hi Aidan,
I am really impressed with all of your photos. However I am most impressed with your pictures of for example the Great Northern Diver in Brand's Bay. As another Dorset resident I have seen these birds and know how far away they are from the hide. I would like to know what size lense you used for these photos as I am about to buy a digital slr and would love to be able to take pictures as good as yours.
Many thanks
Guy

Hi Guy

The lens was a Tamron 200-500mm on a Canon 350D.
The shot was taken handheld from a distance of about 20 feet.
Its took just over a month of persistent effort to get this particular bird used to my presence, figure out where its feeding pattern woud take it, and even more importantly, used to the noise of the camera firing.

Regards
Aidan

Thanks very much Aidan. If I can take photos anywhere near as good as these when I get my camera I will be very pleased.
Thanks again.
Guy
