Galveston October 2009 Part A

I went to Galveston and went birding with Jim Stephensonand saw a couple of lifers as well as a number of other birds.  The light was good and I got some nice pictures.  The morning started fairly early and the first bird that I saw was a lifer.  I saw a Vermillion Flycatcher.  It was early and my first pictures were not as good as my later pictures.  After the day with the group was over, he came back and I followed him for a several minutes getting shots of him from the top of the tower and the stairs.

A couple of Ospreys were flying from the bay and flew over a couple times.

Driving to the beach we saw a Long-billed Curlew.

We came across a flock of Yellow-headed Blackbirds (more lifers)

We saw a White-tailed Kite on the way too

When we got to San Luis Pass, we saw shorebirds, starting with this Marbled Godwit:

American Oystercatchers

And a number of Red Egrets (Adults, Juvies and White Phase)

We saw three types of plovers: Black-bellied Plover, Snowy Plover, Piping Plover

A really nice looking Tri-colored Heron:

marbled gowit

the marbled godwit is definitely on the list of birds I would like to see - and you have a great osprey shot! very nice.

Thanks

Hey Dale, I really appreciate your comments. It is funny what people find interesting on the entries. For some the Flycatcher or the Blackbird, others the endangered Plovers, or the differences in the Reddish Egrets. What perks your interest in the Godwit?

Great shots!

Beautiful images, Dave! I especially like the vermilion flycatcher. Last weekend I found a first-year male of this species up here in Dallas, so your captures feel timely (and you had better light!).

And I have to admit I'm smitten by tri-colored herons. Your picture really does them justice. Stunning birds...

Best regards,

- Jason
