Yesterdays Owling was way early for me and not very successful in terms of visualizing the owls (since we got the two species by call it was still deemed a success). Today we only had to start at 6 am which was an hour and a half later! Pretty funny that getting up at 5 is late, don't you think? Anyways, Steve and I go out and go to a spot that he knows from past experience has owls and within a minute of playing Eastern Screech Owl calls from his tape, this small white flash goes by me. I had never seen one and thought that it was a mockingbird or something of that type, so I didn't say anything. About 15 seconds later the flash went by and landed about 10 feet away from us and I pointed it out to Steve. He brought his spotlight up on him and there he was! I didn't even have time to set up my monopod, so I shot these two pictures handholding the camera. I am really proud of these two shots, so here they are:

We heard a total of 7 throughout the day but only saw this one and another one doing a flyby. We also heard and barely saw a couple of Great Horned Owls, but no Barred Owls. Hope you like the pictures as much as I do!

Great photos, Dave! I've never yet managed to see or even hear a Screech Owl.
