Rediscovering the Joys of Birding

Wednesday, January 2, 2008 - My First Ever Year List!

Never having done a year list before I found it interesting to wonder what you would see first. Suddenly all those common birds that you don't really bother about are important again! 9am on New Year's Day I was standing out in my back garden in my dressing gown and jymjams just looking to see what was around. I was pleasantly surprised at what I saw without even using my bins.
 Goldfinch
 Collard Dove
 Wood Pidgeon
 Blackbird
 Great Tit
 Robin
 Blue Tit
 Dunnock
 Magpie
 Jackdaw
 Carrion Crow
 Redwing
 Black-headed Gull
 Lesser Black-backed Gull
 Starling
 Chaffinch
Later we took a traditional New Year's Day walk on Port Meadow en famille. Whilst I took my bins, we met up with another family that I knew and in order to be sociable I didn't spend too long peering out at the birds so I know I left a lot off but still managed to get:
 green finch
 moorhen
 mallard
 mute swan
 house sparrow
 widgeon
 lapwing
 golden plover
 shovler
 pintail
 pied wagtail
 gadwall
 ruff
So 29 on the first day.

About Me

I used to be a birder in my youth but rather lost interest in my teens as other things became more interesting. However recently I've rediscovered this interest and would like to share my sightings and thoughts in this blog.
