Birding Bloggers, Old Codgers & Head-light Flashing Doggers!

It's amazing what you can see up on Cannock Chase these days.  There's something for everyone from dog-walkers and mountain bikers to sordid sex olympians.... and of course birders.  Various members of the W.M.B.B.P.F. - West Midland Birding Blog Popular Front met up albeit minus it President Martyn Yapp in order to take part in a quest to find a few European Nightjars on this calm (yet lust-filled), summer evening.

Ban the Sugababes!  The Chase is for birds but not this type of 'bird'.

As well as myself representing the County of Warwickshire there was Richard Powell of Local Birding for Local People flying the flag (or waving the white hankie) for Staffordshire, Kay and Max of Brightside Birding holding the baton for the W*st Midlands and Pezza Perrins of Tame Valley Birding carrying the torch for errrrrm.... the independent Republic of 'The Lame Valley'.  We were also joined by Jules Allen as well as and Stuart and his dog.  After parking up near the cafe, we strolled past the Katyn Memorial car park which was already a hive of activity.  Despite the distractions of 'friendly' young ladies and steamy car windscreens we remained focused and headed down towards the Sherbrook Valley.

As it was still pretty early we decided to see if we could connect with a Fartdord Warbler (cunningly conundrummed in order to protect the species true identity) before they settled down for the night.  Unfortunately none could be located but a couple of Common Cuckoos were nice to see.  As we wandered around we encountered large groups of the more senior members of the birdwatching fraternity, pacing the heath like a bespectacled army of silver-haired affiliates of the Home Guard.  Despite the lack of hot sylvia action we did enjoy some pretty impressive views of a reeling Grasshopper Warbler in roughly the same area.  With no sight of sound of any Goatsuckers we decided to change tactics and after a patient search we eventually located a single European Nightjar 'churring' away at a different location along with yet another Grasshopper Warbler for company.  Unfortunately we didn't see the crepuscular little bugger though and as darkness descended it was time to head home.

As we approached the Katyn Memorial car park to say our goodbyes we suddenly received a flash, not of boobs nor of willy but of car head-lights.  Apparently this a cordial invitation by the inhabitants of the vehicle offering you to head over and view them taking part in an lewd sex act or two.  Despite Max being quite tempted he was eventually bundled into the back of the car by Kay and transported safely back to Birmingham.  With Max accounted for, it was suspicious that Tom Perrins and Jules Allen disappeared together for a few minutes.  Tom was eventually located leaning up the side of my car panting like a hot dog.... he blamed his condition on a steep hill that he claimed he'd just climbed.

OMG how did you know of that website for starters, and secondly I wondered why a car flashed it's headlights at me in the Katyn the other night, gulp!

Arch Responds: Errrrrm my good friend John Scullard sent me the link for that site. :o) PS: I hope that no 'gulping' was involved at the time Anonymous?

Saturday 13 June 2009 - Night Birding on the Chase!

Posted by Russ Berger
Hi Mate, I've never seen the black rumped, long legged bird down there, I will have to look harder! I believe there is a certain Finnish ASBO birder looking at flight times to get over there now. Quality blog mate!

Arch Responds: I doubt it bro' he's probably stalking student half his age as we speak. :o)

Hey Up Archie

Good to meet up with your good self, Tom and Julian. It was a shame "El Presidente" Yapp was unable to make it.

Arch Responds: Are you sure it wasn't the Yappster and his missus flashing their headlights at us as we left? :o) Good to meet you too at last mate, I apologise for the behaviour of Thomas, he tends to get quite excited when he's not confined to his native 'Lame Valley'. :o)

Sunday 14 June 2009 - Nocturnal Birding

Posted by Kay Donaghy
I did wonder where Tom and Julian had disappeared to!

I'm sorry the guaranteed 'strumpets' didn't show, nor the Nightjars, but a reeling Gropper and a flash isn't a bad nights work! ;)

Arch Responds: Teee heee! Never mind heh? Better luck next time.... in fact I might confine myself to the car park during any future liaisons on The Chase. :o)

Sunday 14 June 2009 - Missing Pezza and Jules!

Posted by Pezza Perrins
This is all unfounded speculation!

Arch Responds: Pezza, face facts, you both disappeared just after the 'flashing incident' occurred. We were worried about you both, in fact we were just about to phone the Staffordshire Constabulary and report you as being kidnapped.

Sunday 14 June 2009 - A Right Roasting!

That would be some sight, seeing Jules and Pezza 'spit roasting' some horny nympho in the back of a clapped out car!!!

Arch Responds: Would there be room for all 3 in the back of Pezza's Ford Fiesta? :o)

Monday 15 June 2009 - Roasted Temminck's

Posted by The Moore-hen
Oh my God! I've just read the comment regarding Tom and Jules 'roasting' while eating my lunch. Needless to say it is now in the bin! I doubt the pair could last the standard 3 minutes even including the pizza and fag after...well to be fair Tom would probably eat the pizza first then do the 'roasting' act afterwards......a scary thought!!

Monday 15 June 2009 - Old codgers

Posted by Anonymous
I guess I was probably in one of the old codger groups you kindly mentioned, but we did have great views of a pair of Nightjars. So there!!!!

Arch Responds: Thanks for that, there's nothing worse than being 'gripped off' by an old codger! In fact I thought that kind of thing was confined to the Katyn car park after dark. :o) And are you positive that it was a pair of Nightjars that you were viewing as Tom and Jules were doing a very convincing impression of Caprimulgus europaeus as they pranced around the heath with their white handkerchiefs... which incidently also came in useful in the Katyn car park afterwards. :o)

About Me

Aye up folks! My name is Adam 'Archie' Archer, a birder from the West Midlands of England where the birds maybe slightly sh*te but the birders are among the best in the World. This is simply a blog about my birding experiences from my beloved Isles of Great Britain. I have been fortunate to see many great birding spectacles from Unst at the highest tip of Shetland to pelagic trips off the coast of the Isles of Scilly. I have also included sightings from around my home in North Warwickshire and my local patch Alvecote Pools a Site of Special Scientific Interest that straddles the Warwickshire & Staffordshire borders. Birding is a great hobby.... so please relax, smile & enjoy it. WARNING: SOME CONTENT MAY OFFEND! PLEASE NOTE THAT ANY COMMENTS LEFT ON THIS BLOG ARE NOT NECESSARILY THE VIEWS OF MY GOODSELF.... SO THERE!
