Eurasian Black Terns at Alvecote Pools SSSI

An early morning visit to Laundry Lane provided several juvenile Common Whitethroats, several Lesser Whitethroats, 2 juvenile Garden Warblers and a juvenile Blackcap as well as my first Willow Tit in a while.  They can prove really elusive and quiet during the breeding season.

With the water levels nice and low, the reserve is proving more popular with wildfowl at the moment.  A good count of 18 Northern Shoveler and 20 Common Teal were fresh in over the past few days.  A pair of Little Egrets also found the conditions to their liking as they commuted during the day between Mill Pool and Upper Pool.  The highlight however was a party of 3 Black Terns (2 moulting adults and a juvenile) dropping in to feed over Mill Pool at 9.00am and remained on site until 6.30pm at least.

Other sightings included Hobby, 2 Green Sandpipers and Common Kingfisher.

About Me

WARNING: PARENTAL GUIDANCE IS ADVISED. CERTIFICATE 18. Thanks for dropping by... I go by the name of Adam 'Archie' Archer, a birder from the West Midlands of England & Chief Executive of ASBO (Association of Satirical Birders & Ornithologists). This is simply a blog relaying my tales from around the wonderful Isles of Great Britain (& sometimes beyond). I have been fortunate to witness many great birding spectacles from Unst at the highest tip of Shetland in the far north to pelagic trips off the coast of the Isles of Scilly in the extreme south west. I also also include sightings from around my home in north Warwickshire and my local patch, Alvecote Pools a SSSI that straddles the Warwickshire & Staffordshire borders. Birding is a great hobby so please relax, smile & enjoy it.... & for goodness sake don't take it all so seriously! PLEASE NOTE THAT VIEWS EXPRESSED IN THE COMMENTS ARE NOT NECESSARILY SHARED.
