Besançon, Birding and Sketching

• Saturday 26 April 2008 - Bonelli's Warbler - très bon Bonelli!

After hearing plenty of Bonelli's Warblers yesterday without seeing a single one, I popped up to a place where I was told had plenty of Bonelli's - just behind the Citadelle, there weren't plenty - there was just one, but he was so obliging, feeding and singing in an open bush right next to some steps that I could sit on that I was over the moon. The song was already familiar to me, but it was the first time I could hear the call - nothing like a Willow Warbler or a Chiffchaff, much more like a Siskin than a warbler. Other sightings were a pair of Woodpigeons, a Peregrine, a pair of Buzzards, 3 Kestrels and a male Goosander. A good number of Swifts are now back high over the town.

Butterflies included Brimstone, Red Admiral, Orange Tip and Scarce Swallowtail.
