Besançon, Birding and Sketching

• Sunday 3 August 2008 - 3/8/08 Besançon - Vaire le Petit

More of a bike ride with friends than a birding trip, but I was constantly left behind as usual!

Highlights were 2 Common Sandpipers, a few young broods of Mallards, a complete lack of Goosanders, 3 young Moorhens, many young White Wagtails - about 15 together at la Malate, and many seen on the sides of the river. A Peregrine at the Citadelle, a male and a fledgling Stonechat at Roche-lez-Beaupré and a moulting female Sparrowhawk being mobbed by Swallows at Vaire-le-Petit. There was also an increase in the number of Woodpigeons, with about 8 seen.

Nick, I know you get a lot of Goosanders but didn't realise you saw so many that not seeing any would be a highlight! Little Stint the best round here lately. Good birding, Chris.

seriously that is a highlight! I think it's the first time I've ever gone along that stretch and drew a blank - there were 3 broods along there not so long ago, come to think of it though they do leave the area after breeding and return about September - would love to know where they go!

Little stint would be nice!
