Bad Finnish Birdwatcher

Tuesday, January 23, 2007 - Finally winter

I got what I was waiting for. Winter. There is snow on the ground (1), the lake is frozen solid (2), temperature is way below freezing (3). Identification is based on these three separate features, I'm pretty sure it's correct. I didn't hear the voice though, perhaps my wool-cap muffled it. I was so confident with my identification that I didn't even bother to wait for some additional features like that tingling feeling in my fingers and toes after standing still for a while. I'm no expert on winters, but I got some experience, I got way over 20 of them under my belt (and waaaay under 30).

Had some spare time after lunch today, so I went for a walk for about an hour. Lots of fresh tracks in the snow. Brown hares had been digging grass, a fox had been digging cranberries (tasty!), weasels, moles... There was a very jumpy pheasant cock in the bushes next to my school. It's fearful appearance was a stark contrast to what it will be in spring - cool, calm, pompous, feathers fluffed out and surrounded by a harem. But I can't blame it now - there was a female goshawk sitting in a tree not far away.

Common Oak, Quercus robur

I got artistic with these formations on the ice...
