Bad Finnish Birdwatcher

Thursday, April 5, 2007 - Goshawk

I walked through a park on my way home today. Nothing much to see, I thought, as I strolled ahead. Suddenly - my legs stopped moving before the message reached my brain properly. A huge hawk in the shadow of a spruce just ten meters in front of me. An adult female Goshawk. Wind was spreading white feathers around it on the lawn - and they were not its own. It gazed at me shortly - yellow eyes blazing - a fierce look. Then it resumed ripping bits of red meat from its prey. A man walked towards me and just a few meters away from the hawk, he didn't notice it and the hawk didn't wan't to leave its well earned meal. It ripped bits of meat in a steady pace from the bundle of bones and flesh that had been a pigeon a few moments earlier. The pigeons head was still untouched but attached to the red mush of a body - a grotesque sight. I crept to about five meters from the hawk and got some lousy shots with my pocket-camera. Then I backed away and took a longer route home so I wouldn't disturb her meal.

Do I look like I wanna share my meal?
