Bad Finnish Birdwatcher

Sunday, June 24, 2007 - Lesser Grey Shrike

A trip to Hanko today. Started early, in the middle of the night actually. Nightjar -hour. Heard a few of these wonderful birds. Then I also approached one that I heard shouting pretty close to the road. Well - it got silent as I got closer and I thought I wouldn't get to see it. Kept walking ahead in the forest anyway just for the fun of it - a true joy to walk in an open forest with soft moss on the ground early in the morning. The first Robins and Song Thrushes of the morning started to sing. And then - the Nightjar flew over, just above my head, with silent wing-beats followed by glides. It's phantom-like flight made it seem like it wasn't flying in air at all, but some other substance, like the fresh morning air was water that it was diving in. It flapped it's wings together loudly and disappeared into the trees as fast as it had appeared.

Common Redshank making it very clear I'm not welcome

It looks a bit funny but it's still a Mallard

I hadn't been birding that long - I had been to about 1/3 of the places in Hanko I wanted to visit - when my cell phone beeped. Yes, that's right, first it's silent for weeks and finally when I'm over 100 kilometers from home, it shouts that there's a Lesser Grey Shrike just a few kilometers from home. Great! Well - had it been a lifer, I would have driven there immediately - now I kept birding, although somehow it just didn't feel the same anymore...

Eventually I drove back home and on the way stopped at Lauttasaari where the shrike was. And sure enough - I've been strangely lucky with my twitches all year, perhaps I should quit trying to search for birds myself altogether - I saw it. It didn't sit openly on top of a bush like shrikes usually do. It spent time inside the crowns of trees. It was pretty hard to spot unless it flew. It was also quite fearless, it didn't care if you stood right under it's tree of choice. It just concentrated on it's bugs.

PS: Little did I know that there was an Audouin's Gull (new for Finland) in Espoo at the time of these events...
