Bad Finnish Birdwatcher

Friday, August 31, 2007 - It's coming, they're coming!

On Tuesday I saw a flock of Waxwings. I didn't have binoculars so I wasn't sure at first. Just 50 silhouettes flying against the overcast sky. The silhouette is the same as Starling's, but something about them caught my attention. Finally at some point the flock landed in a tree-top, some of them lifted their crests up. Waxwings. Quite early for them here on the south coast. There aren't rowan-berries this year to slow them down, they'll head through to more southern countries - where, I have no idea.

Today, I heard Cranes from the blue sky. High above, a flock of about 40 headed south, announcing their departure as they glided.

The mornings are already cool and the air has a crisp scent to it. In northernmost Lapland the first snow hit the ground this week.

I evaded the word this far, but I'll say it now: autumn. It is here, and the birds, they're coming too.
