Bad Finnish Birdwatcher

Tuesday, September 11, 2007 - Greater Spotted Eagle

After I got on the mainland on Sunday I took a detour on my way home. There was a Greater Spotted Eagle that had been staying for a few days on a small area. So - like many others I went to twitch, after all it was just a few kilometers out of my route. I get to the place I had heard was the place to be and as I walked down a small road I heard a Crow. This was just the kind of short sound a Crow would make when it's mobbing a hawk. I think to myself: "It would be too easy if that Crow was mobbing the eagle I came to twitch." In about 30 seconds I see two birds in the sky above the trees straight ahead, a smaller one and a larger one. So I look at the pair with my binoculars and yes, a Crow and a Greater Spotted Eagle. I got really good views with my scope as well. It was so easy it felt ridiculous. I hardly earned that eagle. Sometimes after twitching I just feel, well, dirty.

Some pictures of the bird can be seen here and here.
