Saturday, November 17, 2007 - Suomenlinna

I went to Suomenlinna this morning. I walked a trip of about three hours on the island-group and watched a bit out to sea. It's starting to look like winter. Not that cold, but a bit of snow on the ground, just enough to make places a bit whiter. And the birds have gotten scarce.

The sea is quite empty, there was a constant flow of migrating Common Gulls heading west. One Common Eider, one Long-tailed Duck and six Velvet Scoters were all I saw swimming on the south side. One Woodpigeon was among a flock of Feral Pigeons, wouldn't be the first one to spend the winter in Suomenlinna. One Reed Bunting and one Chaffinch. The rest of the birds were pretty much the species you could expect to see even in mid-winter, only the waterbirds (Goosanders, Goldeneyes, Mallards and Wigeons)  would be gone, once the sea has frozen.
