Tuesday, January 20, 2009 - White-bellied Seedsnipe, Mount Tarn, Chile
The White-bellied Seedsnipe (Attagis malouinus) is the southernmost member of the Thinocoridae family, which is only represented in South America by four species. This endemic species to Patagonia inhabits scree slopes with cushion vegetation between 650 to 2,000 meters, from Magallanes region, in Chile and sw Río Negro in Argentina down to the southern portion of Tierra del Fuego, including the Cape Horn or Wollaston Archipelago (Couve & Vidal, 2003). This individual was photographed sitting on its nest, which is only a depression on the ground and lined with some down. The nest has three eggs and an additional unattended egg was in the immediate surroundings. This single individual was seen on a walk to the summit of Mount Tarn, located approximately some 60 km south of the city of Punta Arenas, southern Chile on January 3rd, 2009. © Photo by Claudio F.
