Alpine Accentor in the Apuan Alps, C Italy, December 7, 2005Situated between the Apennines and the sea, the Apuan Alps, recognised as one of the most distinctive mountainous areas in Italy, create a natural curve protecting the hills and plains below. The peculiarity of this mountainous range is the variety of the shape and form of its peaks. Here you can find endless veins of marble, spas and mineral water springs (known for their low salt content), streams, woods and numerous caves, including the largest and deepest (1210 m depth) cave in Europe called "Antro" of Mount Corchia. The Apun Alps beeing considered as unscalable mountains in the past, are nowadays a very interesting tourist area on the naturalistic, speleological and excursion points of view. In this area, Lorenzo Pardini was able to photograph an Alpine Accentor close to the bothanic garden of Pian della Fioba on December 7, 2005.
