Common Loon today and 221 more Divers this monthA Common Loon or Great Northern Diver Gavia immer was found today at Gera Lario, Como lake, NW Italy, by Angelo and Alberto Nava, photo courtesy of Roberto Brembilla. This is an irregular species in Italy, found in Alpine lakes or offshore in Upper Adriatic. December will be recorded probably as the best month of ever for Loons in Italy, because a survey in mid-December, called the "Diver Day", carried out by more than 100 bird enthusiasts, showed a nationwide count of 189 Artcic divers Gavia arctica and 32 Red-throated Divers Gavia stellata. In the survey, the maximum birds were 111 Arctic Divers counted in the Garda lake on December 17. 21:47 - Saturday, December 31, 2005 - post comment
