Hybrid African Spoonbill X Sacred Ibis in the Po Delta, NE Italy

The picture shows an hybrid African Spoonbill (Platalea alba) X Sacred Ibis (Threskiornis aethiopicus), taken recently in the bird sanctuary of Punte Alberete, Ravenna, NE Italy. The sanctuary host a huge colony of herons, egrets, spoonbills, ibis and cormorants. Both African Spoonbill and Sacred Ibis are breeding in the colony. An hybrid Eurasian X African Spoonbill was recorder recently there.

    date of the observation

    Nice picture, I wonder if it is possible to know the date of the observation; I was in the Punte Alberete area lasta summer and I (likely) saw a strange bird like that one, but I am not totally sure ...

    ibis ibrido

    Il giorno 22/04/2009 ho visto l'ibrido dalla torretta di Valle Mandriole. Non sapevo fosse un ibrido inanellato. Ho creduto fosse un Ibis sacro. L'avvistamento รจ durato una decina di secondi durante il quale ho seguito l'esemplare in volo prima che si gettasse nel fitto del canneto sotto un albero secco dove era posato un airone cenerino. Non ho guardato se aveva anelli...ma non penso ci siano altri ibis sacri in zona,vero??! Spero che il dato possa esservi utile!

    hybrid spoonbill/ibis

    We saw this exact individual in the same area last sunday and monday (17/18 May 09) and were completely flummoxed as to what it could be, until a local birder told us the story.

    I'll post some photos and more info on my blog in the next few days.
