BIRDING IN LANZAROTE (CANARY ISLANDS)

Saturday, September 5, 2009 - JUNE-JULY-AUGUST 2009 LANZAROTE REPORT

by Francisco Javier García Vargas

In a summer without surprises, the most remarkable about June was the presence of Cattle Egrets nesting at the new site in Arrecife: a little "wooded"  and fenced area next to the Cabildo building. It´s a good new after the destruction of the first nesting site at the sea avenue.

There is nothing to say about July, but August brought with it interesting observations. The most remarkable was a rarity for the Canary Islands: Orphean Warbler (1 bird that I saw at La Santa on 21/VIII. The bird was very shy and nervous and could only take a few record shots). This observation is framed inside a good (but short) passage of passerines over the island between 20 and 23/VIII when very good numbers of Melodious and Willow Warblers were seen. 1 Eurasian Reed Warbler was seen near Teguise golf course on 22/VIII, Western Bonelli´s Warblers were at Los Valles on 22/VIII, and 1 Woodchat Shrike at La Santa on 21/VIII.

Other Ausgust interesting observations include: Bulwer´s Petrel (2 birds that I saw at sea from Arrecife coast on 16/VIII), Purple Heron (2 birds at Janubio salt pans on 20/VIII), Eurasian Oystercatcher (the bird at Janubio was seen there on 14, 23 and 30/VIII), 1 Little Ringed Plover at Tías golf course, 1 Red Knot at Janubio on 30/VIII and 1 Ruff at the same place on 20/VIII.
