BIRDING IN LANZAROTE (CANARY ISLANDS)

Friday, April 6, 2007 - MARCH 2007 LANZAROTE REPORT

by Francisco Javier García Vargas

On march 2007, three new species have been added to our personal list of birds seen in Lanzarote: Garganey (a drake I saw at Los Cocoteros salt pans on 31/III), Red-throated Pipit (2 birds seen by A. Unquiles at Puerto del Carmen on 24/III) and Corn Bunting (1 bird I saw at El Cable sands on 24/III). About Corn Bunting, some authors have said that it is a rare breeding bird in the island, but it is the first I see in five years. The bird looked so tired and the place where I saw it (coastal sands next to a beach), makes me think that is more probably it was a bird on migration.

About rarities, Lesser Scaup remained at Janubio until at least 03/III and 1 second winter Audouin´s Gull that I saw at Arrecife on 02/III (my third for the island).

About other scarce migrants, 1 Black-necked Grebe remained at Janubio until at least 03/III, Black-crowned Night Heron (1 adult bird I saw at Arrecife on 04/III), White Stork (1 bird I saw at Puerto del Carmen on 27/III and 2 birds at Arrecife and 1 at Zonzamas rubbish dump on 31/III), Northern Shoveler (2 birds, male and female, seen by J. Sagardía at Puerto del Carmen on 18/III), Black Kite (1 bird seen by J. Sagardía at Zonzamas rubbish dump on 21 and 22/III), Eurasian Marsh Harrier (1 adult male seen by J. Sagardía at San Bartolomé on 17/III), Black-winged Stilt (birds seen at Arrecife and Puerto del Carmen), Pied Avocet (1 bird seen by A. Unquiles and by J. Sagardía at Janubio until at least 20/III),  Little Ringed Plover (8 birds at Janubio, 4 at Puerto del Carmen and 1 at Los Cocoteros), European Golden Plover at Arrecife, Ruff (birds at Janubio and Puerto del Carmen), Black-tailed Godwit (2 birds at Janubio on 03/III), Green Sandpiper at Arrecife, Common Tern (a flock of about 30 birds I saw flying north at Arrecife on 02/III and one at Arrecife on 25/III), European Bee-eater (1 bird I saw at El Cable on 24/III), Sand Martin (birds at Arrecife on 19, 20 and 21/III), Red-rumped Swallow (1 bird at Arrecife on 19/III and 2 at the same place on 20/III), Meadow Pipit (birds at Puerto del Carmen), Northern Wheatear (1 bird at Montaña Blanca and another at Costa Teguise) and Grey Wagtail at Arrecife.
