Monday, May 7, 2007 - APRIL 2007 LANZAROTE REPORT

by Francisco Javier García Vargas

On april 2007, the most interesting about breeding birds was the Ospreys nesting at Famara cliffs, and we saw the pair at nest on 05/IV. Another interesting observation was an adult Egyptian Vulture at Zonzamas rubbish dump on 11/IV) and the arrival of the European Turtle Doves.

About rarities, the only we saw this month was Ruddy Shelduck (3 birds at Mala reservoir on 05/IV).

About scarce migrants, the most interesting observations was Squacco Heron (1 bird seen by Juan Sagardía at San Bartolomé on 12/IV), White Stork (at Zonzamas rubbish dump, 8 birds on 05/IV, 10 on 06/IV and finally 16 on 08/IV that have remained there into may), Garganey (the bird seen at Los Cocoteros last month or a different bird was seen at Puerto del Carmen on 10, 11 and 15/IV), Montagu´s Harrier (1 female I saw at Arrieta on 01/IV), Common Moorhen (1 bird at Arrecife on 29/IV that has been there into may), Collared Pratincole (3 birds at Puerto del Carmen on 10 and 11/IV and at least 1 until 14/IV),  Little Ringed Plover (1 bird I saw at Puerto del Carmen on 08/IV), European Golden Plover (the bird at Arrecife remained there until at least 06/IV when it was moulting to summer plumage), Common Snipe (2 birds at Puerto del Carmen on 15/IV), Green Sandpiper (birds at Puerto del Carmen, Mala and Tahiche), Common Tern (3 birds at Arrecife on 09/IV), Alpine Swift (1 bird I saw at Puerto del Carmen on 03/IV), Sand Martin (1 bird at Puerto del Carmen on 15/IV), Red-rumped Swallow (1 bird I saw at Arrecife on 04/IV), Tree Pipit (3 birds seen by Juan Sagardía at Teguise Golf on 08/IV), Meadow Pipit (birds at Puerto del Carmen) and Red-throated Pipit (birds at Puerto del Carmen on 11, 12, 13 and 15/IV).
